It is surprisingly easy to miss cavities when giving a visual oral exam, which is why our dentists at Rockefeller Cosmetic Dentistry use state-of-the-art electronic caries detection tools to quickly and accurately assess the healthiness of your teeth and gums.

Unlike other methods, our electronic caries detector can spot caries (commonly known as cavities) in even the earliest stages, allowing for the best treatment — and prevention — of tooth decay. The ability to know if a lesion is active, progressing slowly or rapidly, or if it’s already arrested allow us to provide the best service possible to keep you smiling for years.

What is caries?

Dental Caries are tooth decay (cavities) that can progress and lead to further dental problems

Dental caries (tooth decay) is a disease caused by acids on the enamel surface of teeth that currently affects 60-90% of schoolchildren and the vast majority of adults. At its origin, caries appears as a small patch of softened (demineralised) enamel on the tooth surface. Oftentimes, the first stage is hidden in the grooves or between teeth, making it harder to detect.

Once it progresses, the softer, more sensitive part of the tooth (beneath the dentine layer) begins to deteriorate rapidly. This weakened surface then collapses forming what is commonly known as a cavity, eventually destroying the structure of the tooth.

Caries can also affect the roots of teeth exposed by gum recession, but this is more common in older adults than in children.

Prevention Techniques for Cavities

Fortunately, there are a variety of proven methods that can help prevent the occurrence and spread of caries:

  • Use of fluorides found in toothpaste and some water sources.
  • Reducing frequent consumption of sugars.
  • Applying pit and fissure sealants through our dentists.

These methods are best used when caries first appears. More advanced measures are necessary if the caries has progressed past the dentine layer of your tooth. If you experience any pain or witness a visual spread in your cavities, it is best to consult one of our general dentists about the most effective treatment plan for you.
